And so read it, I did, over one very, very wet week in Byron, during which the sky remained low and looming and grey, and I spent much of the week curled up on the sofa, candles flickering, tea in hand, as I lost myself in Eugenides much-loved modern classic. Over the years I’ve collected a handful of copies, and when I headed to Byron with a friend in November, I took it, promising I wouldn’t return to Bondi with a single page unread. One such book I did manage to tick of the list – and one that had been on my ever-growing reading pile ever since I first read Jeffrey Eugenides’ The Virgin Suicides when I lived in Los Angeles – was the author’s second book, and winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize, Middlesex. Alas, I wasn’t, and while I read just shy of 90 books in total, as I often lament, I wish I had been more particular in selecting the books I chose to read. ![]() It was something of an ambitious list – but one that I should – and could – have finished, had I been more diligent in my reading. I then tell my students how the picture book we’re about to read is considered an adaptation of the original The Night Before Christmas poem. It is similar to a narrative story, yet it is written in poetic form. We discuss how a narrative poem tells a story, with characters, a setting, and a plot with a problem and a solution. We discuss how the Christmas poem and the Thanksgiving picture book we are about to read are considered narrative poems. Next, I teach students the concept that a picture book, especially a rhyming one, sometimes is really one long poem spread out over many pages with illustrations. I normally say, “It’s almost time for Thanksgiving, but today we’re going to talk about Christmas first!” It definitely catches their attention at the beginning of the lesson. HARD WAY is my favorite of the series-but again, there’s abduction/rape role-play, which I thought was extremely well-done, especially because the h&h (a married couple going through a rough patch) both acknowledge that fantasy and reality tend to blur when they role-play (as opposed to the couple in Cara McKenna’s books who have very crisp, clear boundaries between their role-play and reality).Īlso, a book I just finished, Lauren Blakely’s MY ONE-WEEK HUSBAND, features business partners in a fake relationship who pretend to be a married couple as they check out boutique hotels in France to possibly add to their business holdings.
